Here are some good tips for getting a fixed bid on your specific repair.

Make sure you get a quote IN WRITING before the work begins. (Sometimes you will have to let them put your car on the lift to find out what is wrong, but a good technician rarely needs to disassemble very much to give you a solid estimate.)
Stay in sight of your car while they are checking it, and ask them to show you what is wrong. (A good service writer should be able to explain everything to you so you understand your choices. If they don’t want to, ask for your car back now, and find someplace else!)
Tell them you want to see all your old parts. (Do not just take their word for it.)
Ask if there is any chance of the price going higher? (An honest service writer can give you a good idea if costs could escalate.)
Ask how much the parts are that your repair will require? (Ask if there is a possibility more parts will be needed for this job.)
Ask what brand names and part numbers they are using. (Some major brand parts manufacturers are supplying a very cheap line of parts that some places are now using. These cheap lines are prone to last only the warranty and then fail. Some large chain places use a “house brand” that is about the cheapest you can get.)
Ask what brand of fluids they use. (High quality fluids are worth a little extra because they stand up to the heavy heat and extreme environment. Better quality fluids don’t need replacement as often, saving you time and money.)
Never allow a shop to flush your engine! (This can cause severe engine damage!)
Never allow a shop to flush your transmission without doing a transmission service first. (this too can cause severe damage!)
